Buyer’s Guide
- What bass jig is right for me? Buying the right bass jig can be quite a challenge. First and foremost, you should pay attention to the type of fishing you do. If you enjoy flipping, you should find a bass jig that is specifically designed to handle flipping. If you prefer to do casting, then look for a casting jig. You should also pay close attention to where you’re fishing. A fisherman that spends more time in heavy vegetative and weedy areas should find a bass jig that’s weighted and can withstand larger mat without snagging. Taking all of these things into consideration is essential when purchasing a bass jig.
- Should my bass jig have rattles? Some people prefer rattles while others do not. There is no problem with doing trial and error when buying a bass jig, and trying a jig with and without a rattle will give you a better idea on what your preference is.
- What type of material is best? There are many materials found with bass jigs, and each material has their own pros and cons. Some materials are cheaper than others and should be used in shallower areas, while a stronger and more durable material will be needed for deep sea fishing where staying at the bottom is imperative.
FAQ
What color jig works best for bass?
A black and blue jig works best in dirty water, low light, and around vegetation. In clear water, use a lighter, more translucent color like white, white/blue, or “natural” colors like bone or crawfish brown.
What kind of jig is best for bass fishing?
The Arkie jig, also called Flipping Jis, is the most versatile for bass fishing. These jigs work well in heavy cover like wood or vegetation. You can use them for flipping and pitching.
What is the best size jig for bass?
For normal cover, 1/2 oz or 3/8 oz jigs are appropriate. Use thicker jigs for heavy cover, such as 3/4 oz or 1 oz. In clear shallow water, you can work with a lighter jig, such as 1/4 oz.
What is the difference between a jig and a lure?
“Lure” in fishing is an umbrella term for artificial bait. A jig is a specific type of lure. Typically, jigs consist of a hook molded into a weight. They often have a bright or colorful body.
What does a skirted jig look like?
A skirted jig is designed to look like the prey of a bass fish, such as crawfish, shad, or bluegill. Usually, the skirted jig comes with a silicone skirt attached to a jig head and a weed guard.
Conclusion
There’s many pieces to the puzzle when it comes to successful bass fishing. One of those pieces is, of course, the bait you’re using. Bass jigs have been widely successful when it comes to catching bass of all shapes and sizes, which is why they are so frequently used by fisherman catching bass. Finding the right bass jig for you will depend on your needs and where you’re fishing, as well as the type of fishing you prefer. Take care to do ample research before buying so you pick the right best bass jigs for you.

I have used a bunch of different bass jigs over the years but I think my favorite one is the Bico Original. I fish a lot in the weeds so the design keeps the eye from getting tangled in vegetation. It’s really long-lasting too. I have had mine for a little over a year and have not noticed any wear and tear that affects its functionality.
Del
After trying a ton of bass jigs in my 10+ years of fishing, I think one of my favorite options is the Terminator Pro’s bass jig. It’s great for pretty much any kind of fishing. The black nickel hooks are really strong and I haven’t noticed any bending from large catches. I also really like how the skirt is designed. It never gets caught in any weeds, driftwood, or other sludge. It’s also really easy to clean too, just use some warm water and it will look as good as new.
Brian
Hello, I have a few questions: Do I need a jig with a skirt and if so, what is the best-skirted jig for bass?
Michael Amaro
Hi Brian, thanks for the comment. Strictly speaking, you do not need a skirted jig for bass fishing, but the skirt gives the lure a bigger profile and makes bass more likely to bite. Skirted jigs for bass are made to emulate the motion of crawfish, one of bass’ natural prey. As far as the best-skirted jig for bass, we would recommend the Bico Box bass fishing jig set. With the box, you can choose between 6 and 12 lures of different sizes, which should give you enough options for virtually any type of fishing. Let us know if you have any more questions!”
James
I normally am not a fan of big heavy bass jigs, but the Heavy Mat jig has served me well. I recently moved and all local fishing spots have a lot of dense vegetation, so the Heavy mat is a jig I can use over and over again without fear of it getting tangled in the weeds. The rattle is a nice touch for attracting bass too.
Jason
I have a question for any fishing experts out there. What color bass jig is the best to use? I am currently in a debate with my friend and they say that dark-colored jigs are the best because they stand out against the water more, but I would figure lighter colors are best for visibility. Which one of us is right?
Michael Amaro
Hey Jason, thanks for the comment. The right color jig depends on the conditions. Your friend is partially right, darker colored lures are better for bass fishing at night. The darker colors make a more pronounced profile against the water in low light so they are more likely to attract the attention of bass. During the day when visibility in the water is high, lighter colors tend to work best. So both you and your friend are correct! Hopefully that answers your question, let us know if you have any more!
Adam
My wife is a big fishing enthusiast and I got her a bunch of Booyah Baby Boo jigs for her birthday and she loves them! Most of our fishing spots have a lot of vegetation so the Booyah does a really good job cutting through that stuff and not getting snagged. She mostly favors the brighter colored ones but they all seem to work very well. An excellent gift and I would recommend them to anyone looking for new bass jigs.
George
I have recently been using the Thkfish fishing jigs and really like them. I have noticed my catch rate has gone up since I started using them. They look very realistic in the water and even I have confused them for an actual fish sometimes. I haven’t been using them for very long, but they seem to be of good quality and haven’t shown any signs of wear and tear yet. It’s definitely one of the best jigs for largemouth bass I have used in recent memory.
William
Is it recommended to get a jig that rattles? I have some that have no rattle and they seem to do pretty well, but I want to know if adding a rattling jig would be more effective.
Michael Amaro
Hey William, thanks for the question. AS always, the right decision is up to you. Some people find that rattling jigs help them catch more fish, but you may be able to achieve the same effect with a non-rattling jig if you cast and bait the fish correctly. We would recommend getting one of each and seeing which works best for you. Let us know if you have any more questions!”
Anthony
How many jigs should I get? I mostly stick to topwater casting, so should I get a few sets or just stick with one or two reliable jigs?
Michael Amaro
Hey Anthony, thanks for the question. The number of jigs you get should be based on the different kinds of fishing you do. Since you said you mostly stick to topwater casting, then you should manage with just a handful of reliable jigs, though it always helps to have spares in case you lose one or one breaks. If you fish in a lot of different conditions, it is recommended to grab some different kinds of jigs. Hope that helps, let us know if you have any more questions!
Peter
Can I use one of these jigs for different kinds of fish, or are they only meant for bass?
Michael Amaro
Hi Peter, thanks for the question. Technically, these jigs are made specifically for bass fishing, though they should work just fine for other kinds of fishing. The only kinds of fishing these jigs may not be suited for is deep water fishing. Thanks for the comment, and let us know if you have any more questions!”
